Throughout the club's history the Packers have had official cheerleaders, with the last official squad appearing in 1988. In fact, the Packers are credited as being one of the first professional football teams to use cheerleaders with squads from Green Bay East and West high schools on the sidelines for several games in 1931.

The Green Bay Packers have always relied on their local fans for support as well as their fan organizations. Both the band and the cheerleaders were originally informally organized by local citizens.

From 1961 through to 1972 the official 'Golden Girls,' cheerleading squad led the Lambeau Field faithful in cheers. During that period, both the cheerleaders' routines and attire drew a degree of criticism from a number of fans, prompting the organization to adopt new uniforms in consecutive years in an effort to gain fan support.

Again during the 1980's cheer leaders were once again in action (in uniforms very similar to those worn by the Sea Gals in the mid 1980s).

However after the 1988 season the decision was made not to reinstate them. While some Packers fans supported the official cheerleaders, many were opposed or indifferent, at best.

Helping the Packers make the decision to discontinue the program was a television news poll in which fans were generally split over whether they wanted the program to continue.

Currently, the Packers use cheering squads from two local schools, nearby St. Norbert College, where the Packers have conducted training camp annually since 1958, and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. These cheer squads alternate throughout the home season on a game-by-game basis. There are no plans to return to official cheerleaders.
